2. In the Drives drop-down menu, select the drive you want clean up and click the OK button.
3. Next, under the Disk Cleanup tab, select the files you want to delete. (To know, what files are to be deleted,

4. Click the OK button to delete the selected files.
Run Disk Cleanup once every week to delete the files that are no longer in use by you or your computer to free
up hard-disk space.
Disk Defragmenter
Another useful PC repair tool that you should run regularly (at least once every month) is Disk Defragmenter.
Disk Defragmenter does the job of rearranging files on your hard disk as contiguous blocks, for faster
accessing.
To run Disk Defragmenter in Windows XP, perform the following steps:
1. Click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, select System Tools, and click Disk Defragmenter.
2. Next, select the Drive you want to defrag, and click the Analyze button (A dialog box will appear, telling you
if you need to defrag the drive).
3. Click the Defragment button to defrag the selected drive.
Note: Defragging a drive may take up to 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the amount of fragmentation and
computer specification, in terms of processor speed and amount of RAM. Also, close all applications before you run
Disk Defragmenter.
The Disk Defragmenter helps you in the following ways:
• Allows quick access to programs and files.
• Prevents hard-disk related errors; speeds data access.
chkdsk Utility
In addition to Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter, you should also run the chkdsk utility to fix and prevent
file system errors.
To run chkdsk in Windows XP, perform the following steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run, type cmd, and press Enter.
2. At command prompt type the following command and press Enter:
chkdsk /f
